HistoriCAL Background
The SMAF evaluation grid was developed in the province of Quebec in 1983 by the professor and geriatrician, Réjean Hébert, and his team. The instrument of evaluation was developed in accordance with the first International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Wood's handicap production model (1-2). The tool has been the subject of many validation studies (3 to 7) and recognized as one of the most valid evaluation scale for measuring disabilities (8).
Since then, many components were developed from the SMAF grid, like the social-SMAF, the PRISMA 7, and the ISO-SMAF profiles.
In Québec, the SMAF is integrated into Multiclientele Assessment Tool (MCAT) since its adoption in 2002 by the Ministry of Health and Social Services (9). The MCAT is used in all types of living environment for the evaluation of adults with loss of temporary or permanent autonomy, including the disabled.
The SMAF grid was computerized a first time in 2004, and again in 2006 in the eSMAFII software.
In 2010, a complete revision of the eSMAFII was performed by the Sherbrooke Health Expertise Centre and that is how the new web software iSMAF was born. Because it is very user-friendly, it allows to capture and use data from the PRISMA-7 case-finding tool, the SMAF and Social-SMAF grid, the Iso-SMAF profiles and the Care table.
Today, other scientific work is underway to meet the expectations expressed by users.
